Reading offers wide-ranging benefits to kids. It improves their vocabulary, grammar, speech skills, and comprehension. Reading enhances their cognitive development process; boosts their intelligence, imagination and creativity; and improves logical thinking and problem-solving skills. It allows them to learn new concepts and gain a better understanding of the world around them. It also prepares them for the screening tests that they might take for their educational admittance and for achieving success at school. A study involving a survey of more than 17,000 children found that children who were regular readers performed better in vocabulary and spelling tests.
To motivate your child to read, you need to provide them with the right environment. You can ask them what they would like to read, and accordingly, buy books and keep it in their room. You need to choose books that have visuals along with text, which will make it easier for your child to understand the things they are reading. Children learn a lot from their parents, so you too can start spending time reading books. Let them see you engrossed in a book and they are likely to follow the example. You can make their reading more fun by utilising apps and e-readers.
Helping your child to read is a great way to spend quality time with them. You can interact with them as they read, for example, you can ask what they feel about a specific character in the book; ask them what they learnt from the story, etc. Interactions will improve your child’s learning as well as the bond they share with you.
Here’s what you need to know about incorporating reading in your child’s life.
